I've been playing WC3 since the beginning of RoC. Sadly (maybe? :P), I've only recently found the motivation to play solo ladder for real and to try to improve my skills. But that's not what I was going to talk about here...

Troughout the journey from 1.00 to where we are today, not only the game has evolved. The players have evolved too. When I played my first ladder game ever I was called a "noob" by my ally. Being kind of unfamiliar with the online gaming lingo I basically had no clue what he meant. Later on I read that it's derived from newbie, as noo- sounds like new, and the letter b sounds like -bie when standing alone. One of many tricks from the L337-sp33k. Why do I even write this when it is obvious to you? Well, maybe because lots and lots of people seem to have no idea what 'noob' acctually means. You lose a game, your opponent call you a noob. Fair enough, it's not something you appreciate but you did lose after all. You win a game, your opponent calls you a noob. That's harder to accept.

Basically noob has evolved into a general insult. Of course, noob isn't the only insult you get acquainted with as you play. I've been called the normal ones, like idiot, stupid fuck etc. And the weird and disturbing ones like, 'jew' (nazis? :P).

But then some things happened that I feel has acctually changed the ladder quite a bit. When TFT came out a lot of players, unwilling to make the jump from RoC got left behind. At least in the first few months the quality of players on average was much higher than before. As the old RoC players and the new players to the game started flowing in, a new concept had been established. Manners. Basically, to wish your opponent luck and a good game, to not say gg before your opponent if you were winning and not to flame you opponents if you lost. Now, it is by no way gone, but the amount decreased by a large amount, at least in my experience. It would seem it was derived from the pros who had in their turn derived it from the koreans. But, words and concepts evolve and mutate like the game and players, and it seems that the concept of 'manners' have been stolen by the flamers too, and made into more or less an insult as well. I'm sure most here have sometime heard the ironic phrase "manners, noob". A request for good behaviour followed by an insult. Just... weird...

Now, I'd be delighted if you'd like to share your thoughts and experiences on this subject. Not all have been in the game from the start, but most have some view on this subject.

I try to influence manners in my games on ladder...for one thing if some1 says gg b4 me -and ive lost- ill make him kill all my building unless he admits he used bad manners. If hes ignorant about manners i will explain to him proper edicate (seems kinda stupid i know but i really belieev in good manners) I myself always wish my opponents gl and never use the word noob.....not since i was one.

I've been called a newb a few times. As only being a human I can screw up. maybe I've deserved it.. maybe I didn't, but i didn't care much about it anyway.

I've been playing this game just as long you did since the beginning of roc but i played ladder since I've started. i love competition so ladder was a logical step for me.

Hold the S cause i'm an AINT.

Admirable, but I don't think pissing someone off is going to improve their manners :P

I gotta admit that I'm using lotta nicknames on north, and well, on some of them I'm the way I'm - I would say good mannered (which I'm most of the time, because I think being good mannered is "CooL" - well if everyone is being ass (and most of those freaks out there on bnet are), I have to be not. - It's my "disease" and it's called "Hunger for making the difference" :D), but there are also some other nicknames I use when feeling my ego has been hurted/I'm sad/angry/or simply pissed off. (which is not easy to, but happens) (=

It's clear that by using them I don't want people to know it's me, because, yes, i do care about reputation I have under my nick, and people will only be looking at you the way you show yourself to them. (=

This may sound weird, but it makes me happy when the others are angry LoL. It's called "shadenfreude" in german and the meaning equals to "happiness of the misfortune of others" in english.
No-one can be happy and nice 24/7, so can't I. Therefore, to get out of bad mood, I use this way of bringing someone down/ making him angry, cuz then I really get back to happy mood.

It is all based on my thought that "nothing really matters" or better, "not much is worth the anger". And w3 is one of those things which are worth not. So when someone gets mad over such "unimportant" things, I get back into "happy mode", ready rock and roll ^^

When player in Russia wishes only "hf" He is unmannered. Because in Russia "have fun" is like "I'm so gosu I will rape you hard, so "HF"". Most players wish just "hf" after their lose stick.

There seems to be kind of a relation between manners and level. They aren't neccesarily better , but they change as you progress. On lower levels you get a lot of wannabies who flame you after you stop their tier 1 mass (or whatever) and on the higher levels you get a lot of people talking about how imba your race is and how much luck you have if you creepjack them or whatever. Maybe someone should tell these people that flaming while you're fighting doesn't improve micro :)

What about me I can be bm only after 10lose stick... But I if I was bad mannered in my game.. I always say "Sorry for unmannered play, really sorry." And in usually I get answer like: "nvm, it happens. gl gg in next games". Ppl like these make me mannered.

#6 for the most part its true, but you would be suprised how many people i have actually got apologies from because they were being rude over a game....but yeah i usually stay to make other people pissed because i am. However, if i have a bad game and am really ticked. I will still say gg and leave if the other player has been mannered. Thats just how i am

@#9 That is sooo true :) i always lose when im angry....so why do i keep playing? :/

My acc Mance-Ryder@ Lordaeron..yeha the noob gateway, but better connection for me.(also had this acc since i was noob so stats suck)
