Recently I had this strange dream were I woke up in the room where Neo (the matrix) practice his martial arts with morpheus. Now, I was alone, but suddenly Agent Smith came out from nowhere and said I was living two lives etc. We fought and I bet this will come as a surprise to you, but I lost.. I lost big time, and he said with sort of a thoughtful voice: "Uhm, I think I may have mistaken you for someone else.. kru".

In all my other dreams, I usually kick everyone’s ass because well, it IS my dream. Not this time though, but I realised it was a calling. Yes, it was a sign to wake up from my dreams and really get out there and learn to use this body of mass destruction.

The question stands then, what martial art is the most beneficial for defending yourself against real-time fights. Obviously fighting isn't like in the movies where everything is in slow-motion. So instead of having something like kung-fu where you learn more poses than actual fighting I'm seeking something that can really whoop some ass once the lady in distress finally shows up.

Sadly, I have only limited choices for my wish. Where I will study this fall, they only have a few possibilities: Karate, Tae-kwon-do, Ju-jitsu and the last one is called Kali Sikaran and comes from the Philippines and is a mixture of Boxing, Kickboxing, Kendo, Wrestling, Muy Thai and something similar to Ju-Jitsu, only it's not Ju-Jitsu. I think Kali Sikaran sound really interesting.

What are your experiences regarding martial arts, and what would you choose? ^.-

What about Judo? :)

Tae-kwon-do is more of a sport than a self-defense art imo, but I guess karate or muai thai (that's the spelling I've seen somewhere:P) are good choices here.

Uhm well by the sound of it, i would say that Kali Shikaran.

I train taekwondo myself, and i must agree that i would prefer other martial arts for better self defense. We try to have "real life" situations in our training, but mostly its technique and competition fighting, so i dont think its as good for real life fights as some tougher martial arts may be.

I also trained some karate, and its pretty good, but i only trained it for a year, so cant say that much about it.

But really its more the basics of the martial arts, that matter most in my oppinion, so any martial arts would practically do...

Every fight eventually ends up on the ground and if you know how to fight from the ground u win.

Maybe.. But muai thai makes you able to pretty much have closecombat and win (using knees and elbows). Then you might settle the fight before you ever reach the ground ;D

lol, think again if you try to fight a wrestler up close your done for, they just tie you up so that you cant use elbows knees....its liek this you ever seen UFC...if not its where they take a bunch of different styleof fighters then they fight in a cage fight. Let me tell u the one who always wins knows how to wrestle....which is why most ppl who enter the UFC are Ju-jitzu ppl who learned how to wrestle or vice versa...so really the best answer is learning a combination of a style. Wrestling, for knowlege of positioning and Ju-jistsu for things like submission holds

Wing Tsun makes you disable the poor fucker before he gets to you on arm length. And the best thing is that it uses the energy of the attacker ;)

ju-jitsu and aikido ftw. i like them because they are easy. They don't require you to be massive in order to have a word to say and it's pretty straight forward.

you can disable or make your opponent scream in pain using just 2 fingers. I kinda like that, maximum effect, minimum force.

There is only one true fighting technique in my world and that is Jeet Kune Do. The masters style, i've attended one of "his" 2 schools in Denmark 10-15 years back for a few years and it was quite a trip into the unknown and inforeseen, learning things I didnt think were possible.

BL lives on in the hearts of his life-time fans, i'm one of them.

Well I would also like to learn more about Bruce Lee's martial art philosophy, but it's not an option because they don't have anything like that where I live, so..

Army is right. Wing Tsun is one of the best if not the best...

I did it myself for 3 years.. at the end i had to stop cuz i was too young to go further, due to the fact that Wing Tsun is quite brutal. The good thing about it you need no warm up to do the sport, cuz you dont jump around etc. you mostly have 1 basic position where you act from.

I also did Tae Kwon do for 7 years and its really mostly a sport .. no self-defense :P its fun anyways.

Karate is bullshit :)

I also did Hap Ki do - a mix of Tae Kwon do, Kung-fu and other stuff. It is very good but i also had to stop after 1 year cuz the following stuff would be too brutal for someone below the age of 18. It would cause injuries ... t.t.

I'm thinking: A martial art is only what you make of it yourself. You know; Things differ from how good you can handle techniques and how strong you are to how much work you are willing to put in it.

I've heard so many thing about karate, so I don't know what to think about it anymore. Why is it so crappy?

I think the wrestling guy is correct. If you're a wrestler, and out to hurt your opponent and you get him in a grip it's probably pretty much over. And, a mix of disciplines is probably even better. A boxer who knows wrestling will be able to dodge grips and get punches in (maybe :P). Judo and Karate could be a good combination maybe, but here I'm just guessing :)

:D lol, yeah combination of styles is the best, that way you know what your opponent is doing, at the same time you have different styles to choose from so that your counter is effective. As a bonus your opponent may have no clue what your doing. ( You could make up your own style ;D Wing-jitsu)

I do karate and to me it seems like a much less specialised way of fighting. A lot of ppl may find it boring because of the stance work and the kata.

#26 Your not correct, he did Wing Chun, Jun Fan and Jeet Kune Do and the last one is what he is known for by the hardcore fans. Besides that he had a few other "unnamed" styles.

Jet Li is btw a joke, his movies are ok to watch, but he is a shadow of what Bruce Lee was in RL.

To the guy saying that battles always end up on the ground ; That's not gentlemen's way of fighting, it is very very cowardly. Real fighters wait for their oponent to get back up.
