Can anybody tell me what's happening in Spain?

No Sec

Something terrible is happening in Spain Spain. Since 2001 the most important e-Sports competition, Internationa- World Cyber Games (WCG), has been held in Spain year after year. 2008, however, seems to be a difficult year for Spanish gamers and the first sign was that last WCG SP rejected to help developing the WCG Spain competition. As a result this year Spain will have no representation at the Europe Samsung European Championship (SEC); an event where Team Spain has won medals each year.

  • Which medals Spain got at past SEC events?

2006 : GoldCSS SilverFIFA 06 and Dawn of War

This year was the first where the official SEC shoot'em up game was Counter-Strike:Source. A terrible option in my opinion since CSS was "dead" and no pro teams were playing that game. Spain x6tence.AMD was really strong that year and with less than a month they were able to defeat all the teams attending in Hannover and won the gold medal. But that was not all! Our very own Spanish player Spain Masi won the silver medal, unable to beat Germany SK|styla. And finally Spain R0rUm, the player who joined ToT, showing the world his skills at WCG 05, got a silver medal too.

x6tence.AMD win

x6tence.AMD wins Samsung European Championship

2007: SilverFIFA 07

2007 was not a year like 2006, but at least Spain was able to get one medal, a Silver. That was the beginning of a star, Spain Delfin-1, who came close to getting the gold medal against Ukraine dignitas`Walkman but in the end it wasn't possible.

Spain has shown in Europe that it’s an E-sports country to be reconned with, but since TV and the mass media won’t stop telling the Spanish citizens that it's just about "guys who spend lots of hours playing videogames and have no social life" we’re having really serious problems. Anyway, our situation needs to improve, and with no support that's quite impossible.

- Why Spain?

- What must we do to change the general Spanish public’s point of view?

- What must the spanish community do to gain support from big companies to make it possible for big events to be held?

Pray for us!

nordic countries have no wcg for ages, so many talented sc:bw players...no chance to prove their skills to the world.

Eh? All the nordic countries have WCG-quals, they just don't send SC-players as the game is close to dead (no interest, no gain in PR, no need to hold a qualifier).

oh rly, close to dead. i can assure you fifa is closer to dead and all the new titles ;; if we're so close to dead i wonder how come sc owns every poll wcg makes online.

Is there money in SC outside Korea? No. Ok, then SC is dead. Is there money in FIFA or new titles? Yes! They are not dead. Don't fool yourself, money rules the world.

just because dota or fifa have bigger prize pool on lans it doesnt mean they are better or more alive. such games come and go, they die fast, if you were right then sc would be dead Long time ago - if my eyes haven't failed me...sc is still here and actually expanding...you can replace graphics, you can have more fun games, but you cannot replace quality, it stays.

i found it amusing how people proclaimed sc to be dead just because it doesnt participate in some german "proleague" for wc3, etc. whereas nobody realises that true progaming is in korea, anyone attempting to be a progamer outside korea would be probably tagged as a wannabe.

there is perfectly no reason for scandinavian countries to not have wcg qualis. last year wcg was a disaster, mappool was catastrophic as always, we had groups with random number of players and so many spots left unfilled, not to mention visa problems, etc. sc is still the ultimate rts, if outsiders cannot have respect for it then at least its loyal community is always there to support it and will always dominate any poll related to sc.

money might make the world go round, but it most certainly won't buy quality, a game is a bad game no matter how much money it earns, true players will always recognise quality and stick to a true e-sport over some money-factory games.

SC might have quality, but the rest is bullshit. First and foremost, USA is taking over as the place where you are pro-gamer. If they haven't done it already, MLG will sport higher wages than any KeSPA-player in the next year or two.

Even more, a game's active community and amount of money is the measurement of how "dead or alive" it is. Regardless of what you think, this have something to do with possible WCG-quals. Why should the Nordic countries use money and effort to qualify players to a tournament that they can't get any attention from? It is business, not charity. And that is the general attitude in eSport today - and also why SC is on its way out.

There is no commercial interests in the game outside Korea, and therefore no interest from market-leading clans/tournaments to pick it up. Of course some people will stick to the game forever - just like QuakeWorld - but the game can still be "close to dead".

and that's the reason why e-sports will never be sports unless people realise it's about the competition and supremacy, not money. e-sports are going in a completely wrong direction, in time this will change, i sure hope sc will live to that day.

Errr.. if sport was about competition and not money, then why are athletes so damn rich? Back in the day when athletes had to work and pay their own trips to tournaments etc it was about competition and sportsmanship, now it's mostly commercial.

err, since when are athletes so rich? i've been in athletics for over 6 years so i think i know pretty well how much that sport gives and how much people have, you have to be literally the top of the top to earn money, rest comes mostly from good will of your city/club in which you train.

every good club/country will secure payed trips, i can tell you that most certainly in ex-yu situation was 10x better when it comes to athletics, in my days it was still great, for a very low price we could afford many things, nowadays for triple the price you get much less when you wish to do let's say 10-days preparations (dunno the english word).

every good club/country will sponsor their representatives, nowadays people completely focus on sports so it's only natural that they get their expenses covered; not to mention commercials which are just a part of the show, nothing bad in it.

kenya for example has the world's best trainers and everyone thinks how ppl in africa are poor and just run 24/7 and then "magically" dominate long distance races - yeah right, i mean they are poor but their muscles structure gives them huge advantage over us (the white guys :D) so naturally world's best trainers come to exploit that advantage.

basically there are just 2many misconceptions about sport, but there are two things i like about athletics and which e-sports will probably never have - it's about being most skilled, not the most profitable, all the disciplines dont bring money but they are respected.

2nd thing that most definetly e-sports will never have is this: imagine a room with 8 PCs and 30players, now imagine all 30 players playing their games in a well-organised manner so that everyone gets an equal share of time to practice. there is no hierarchy in esports, etc., when you come to switzerland to do some training and the track has only 4lanes you'll never have anyone in your way while you're running your lap in a certain lane and you will never get in way of someone else,

nobody tells you how to behave, you all come from different parts of world and co-exist on that little track, everyone knows what's done in which lane and who moves away for whom.

I was mostly talking about the professionals, getting seven or eight figure paychecks. It's not because they play the game with the best quality, but they play the games with the highest commercial value.

athletes have to make for living, unless they win all tours of golden league...sc in korea is no different than high jumping for example in the world. point is money does not dictate which disciplines will be in the olympic games or golden league or wherever, otherwise we'd have tons of silly "new sports"

- sadly esports lack "core sports", like the best of rts/fps/etc. that stay in the wcg and new games are added, sc is for example one of such, wc3, cs 1.6...but due to lack of respect every game is being replaced by a newer title that follows demands of sponsors, not competitive gaming.
