This part of the article will take a look at the gametypes that Quake 4 has to offer. It will not expand into all the gametypes available after installing mods, but just the default ones offered.
First I will be taking a look at the FFA (Free For All) gametype, which in Quake 4 is called "Deathmatch".
Deathmatch
Deathmatch is the most simple type of gametype that Quake 4 has to offer. You walk around, grab items and weapons and start looking for opponents to shoot. It is the standard public server gametype, where everyone can join and try to get as much frags (killing your opponent is called fragging and the point you got for each kill is called a frag) as you can within the timelimit.
All maps can be used for the Deathmatch gametype, but the bigger maps are usually more suitable.
Minimal 1v1.
Match ends on Fraglimit or Timelimit.
Team Deathmatch
This gametype gives a little spin to the Deathmatch gametype. Instead of being able to just frag anyone you'd want, you now have a team. With this team, you have to frag the opposite team as often as possible and try to not be fragged by them in return.
In leagues this is one of the 3 major gametypes used, together with CTF and Duel.
In Team Deathmatch every frag you make is added to your team's score and every time you decide to take out one of your friends, a frag is substracted from your team's score. Matches usually revolve around the powerups and the team controlling those will usually come out on top!
Played 4 vs. 4.
Match ends on Timelimit (or Fraglimit).
Capture the Flag
One of the oldest mods available to Deathmatch games is Capture the Flag, since quite some time a familiar face in the Quake series as a gametype.
With capture the flag, you play in a team against an opposing team. Both teams have a base, which holds their flag. To score a point, you need to grab the enemy flag and take it to your own flag which is called "capturing the flag".
The bases are clearly seperated by using the team's colors (orange and green in Quake 4), which resemble the Marine and Strogg factions. The game mainly revolves around defending and capturing the flag, which can lead to very exciting moments.
Played 5 vs. 5.
Match ends on Timelimit (or Capture limit).
Tourney
The last and most played on tournaments is the Duel gametype, or "Tourney" gametype as it's called in Quake 4.
This gametype puts players against eachother in a usually small map and the player that has the highest score at the end of the match, which is determined by a timelimit, wins the match. The matches revolve around mapcontrol, outsmarting your opponents and outaiming them.
Played 1 vs. 1.
Match ends on Timelimit (or Fraglimit).
The next part of the article will focus on the Q4MAX mod that is used in most competitions.
